Up Close and Personal: Working with Digital Imagery

When working with the close-ups of natural organic forms (such as tree bark, water ripples, flower centres or leaf veins),  we have access to much more elaborate patterning and textures than we can see with just our eyes. These images can provide a springboard for exciting patterning, surprising colour combinations and textural explorations.  Using your own images as starting points, you will arrange to have 1-3 images enlarged and pre-printed using commercial printers.  In the workshop itself, you will focus on how to enhance the depth and colour of those images and enhance the “new” qualities that reveal themselves using transparent fabric paints and coloured pencils.  Then, using a wide range of stitching and quilting options, you will further explore and enhance the special qualities of each image that are now revealed.  Wondrous visual phenomena are often revealed and well worth celebrating!

Pre-Workshop Requirements
Before attending the workshop, each participant must have a digital image printed onto specially treated cotton that has a paper backing.  The printed images should be at least 16-20” on the shortest side and at least 20” on the long side.
Arrangements for this process will be organized by the co-ordinator of the workshop and you will need to have 1-3 possibilities ready to go before the workshop starts.
The FINAL image should be no smaller than 16” (or 4800 pixels) on the shortest side. You can use Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or your camera software to resize your images. In Photoshop or Photoshop Elements you go to the Image tab – this is where you change the size and dpi (dots per inch).  Make sure the resample box at the bottom of the dialog box is checked. When you type in the 16”, the other dimension will fall where it may.  Images should be 300 dpi and saved as a Jpeg at the highest quality. You will end up with a large file size. It will likely be over 10mB. Start with as large a file as possible. This will help to ensure a good larger image. If you are familiar with any of the photo editing packages feel free to use those tools.  If in doubt, talk to someone who is more familiar with these procedures.
Leslie Barnes has arranged to have them printed and shipped to Calgary (LB: I am using Alice at Village Gallery, Sydney BC - Alice has printed for a number of Martha's classes; I have seen her work first hand and trust her to do a fabulous job!). Detailed information will be on the supply list including a list price for the printing. Supply lists are sent out after registration. If  you want to see some of Martha's images/final artworks, go to either or  On the MATA Gallery website, you will need to further click on the “Artists” tab and scroll down to “Cole”.  This is her latest work and the basis of this workshop.
